Roads closed as Kuala Lumpur cleans up massive flood in city

Posted on September 12, 2020 by admin

Multiple roads across the Kuala Lumpur city center remain closed this morning as authorities conduct a massive cleanup after yesterday’s flash floods submerged vehicles, damaged property, and even drew snakes out into the water.

Major roads including Jalan Tun Razak near the Petronas Twin Towers as well as Jalan Istana have been shut since 10pm after the water level rose as high as three meters amid a heavy downpour that began around 2pm. The flood caused traffic congestion and the evacuation of hundreds from their homes to nearby evacuation centers.
“The water rose up to my ankles when I was walking towards the train station from Jalan Panggong,” eyewitness Putri Nuraaina, 25, told Coconuts KL today. Jalan Panggong is located in nearby Chinatown.

Putri said that she was leaving the city at 6pm when she got caught in the floodwaters. Fortunately, the water did not spill onto train tracks, and trains were able to operate as normal.
Rescue personnel and members of the city hall have been deployed to affected areas to drain flood water, clean up debris, and remove fallen tree branches, among others.

Dramatic photos of the flood posted online showed snakes slithering in the water near a motorcycle parking lot, people kayaking along flooded roads, and the iconic Jamek mosque surrounded by a body of water.
