‘Awkward’ design in new triple door bus not so convenient for some commuters (Video)

Posted on February 1, 2021 by admin

Just a week into the launch of Singapore’s new triple door buses, some have already pointed out design flaws that could discourage commuters from shuffling to the back of the vehicle.
A man was filmed having difficulties trying to alight via the back exit of one of the buses, a video circulating online since yesterday showed. It turns out that commuters were expected to stand further away from the door and behind the yellow lines before stepping off, which can be difficult considering the small space.
The man also ended up having to leave from the front after the back door appeared to be malfunctioning, and subsequently bumped his head as he walked.
“Highlighting the 3rd door which is not working properly. More so the back door is constructed in such a way that it is inconvenient,” the video caption on the Roads.SG page said . “During alighting or boarding you need to climb one step up and then two steps down to utilise it.”
It added: “Plus it’s in an awkward spot where people coming down second staircase have to climb one step up again to get off….and the roof height at the lower deck makes it not suitable for taller people to stand there. You notice this guy knocked his head, considering he is not tall at all.”
The buses, supplied by Singaporean companies ST Engineering Land Systems and Alexander Dennis Services, were rolled out last week. A total of 100 of them are expected to begin service throughout this year.
The pilot programme is expected to end on 30 April. The Alliance for Action (AfA) on Robotics 1 has deployed on-demand autonomous bus services at Singapore Science Park 2 and Jurong Island on 25 January. “This marks the first time autonomous buses are operating a revenue service in Singapore, bringing local autonomous vehicle services and solutions one step closer towards commercialisation, domestically and abroad,” a statement from ST…
